Darlington Cultural Quarter Evaluation

  • Client:
    Darlington Borough Council

The Brief

To evaluate the Council’s proposals for Darlington’s eastern fringe, inform the development of Darlington’s cultural fringe and map cultural activity across the Borough to ensure that the ambition to create a cultural quarter in the eastern part of the town was realistic, deliverable and co-ordinated.

Our Role

We planned and delivered a fully integrated approach for the Borough exploring existing and emerging cultural provision, commercial values and rental yield alongside detailed analysis of the areas ‘walkability’ and accessibility.

Globe undertook a wide range of consultation, and employed both digital and graphic means of presenting information suitable for inclusion on the Council’s website or as part of subsequent consultation/presentation exercises.

Outcomes

Our cultural mapping evidence formed part of a subsequent Borough application to the Arts Council.

The range of options considered for the site led to recommendations for an increased focus on a more central area of the town and improved pedestrian access between the eastern and central areas to strengthen the existing cultural core of the town.
